I got my start with Typing Task Force when I picked up two Family Basic cassette sets. Hubz helped me convert them to wavs and then I spent a few weeks converting the wavs to playable games in Family Basic. It was exciting to see these brand new, albeit simple, NES games. I started tracking down more Family Basic cassettes and books and type-ins, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

KUNFU CHAN
Kenji Onosawa

Introduction
One day, in China, the famous and supremely evil Qingdao clan assaulted the land.
To save those he loves, CHAN goes to fight the invaders alone.
What shall be CHAN’s fate!?

How to Play
You control CHAN and must defeat the Qingdao clan by punching and dropkicking. For some reason, CHAN can only fight to the left and right, so vertical enemy attacks can be painful, so feint them then attack from the side to defeat them.
If all enemies are beaten by punching, you get a PERFECT BONUS, get ROUND x 1000 points, and CHAN gets one more life.
The cursor keys are used to move around in all 4 directions. Punching is done with ←+↑ or →+↑, and dropkicks are done with ←+↓ or →+↓.

Program Structure
The way enemies chase you is simple and no especially great technique is used; to put it bluntly, anyone could have made this game.

Modding Advice
If you get tired of all 6 mazes and understand hexadecimal, feel free to change the ROUND DATA part. I think it’s easy to understand its structure quicky.
Reference: Chinese Hero

CHECKER FLAG

Dr. D: I gave a look at how the maze data is constructed by converting hexadecimal values into binary form, and understood it immediately. However, the data format only uses the first 14 bits for each 16-bit value.

CLEAR(clear) – Initialise variables
CLS(clear screen) – Clear the display

Kage: Both CLEAR and CLS are commands that get used at the start of a program. “Clear”, as in clearing a stage in a game, or clearing a pole vaulting bar… right??
Tsugumi: Hehe… that’s correct. “Clear” here means to clean up, to remove, to leap over, etc. In this case, CLEAR and CLS erase the variables’ values or the screen, respectively, and clean up things.
Kage: So it’s the same as cleaning, huh? Take out the dirty stuff and make everyting clean and tidy?
Tsugumi: The way it works changes from machine to machine, so make sure you all look up what it does for you.
Kage: Well, I think I’ve suffered a “clear” at this point!

MILK HALL
Momoko Morisawa

Story
Do you know about the Milk Hall? It’s a place that looks like an old coffee shop. In it, you are served milk.
I’m the third-generation inheritor of my grandpa’s shop. Every day I go back and forth between the counter and the tables. Because the shop’s ancient, the floor is riddled with holes. There are also brats running around the place, it’s terrible!
Hey! Give me a hand♥

Let’s Get to Work!
Move the girl with the cursor keys and get the milk. Serving an empty table gives you points. You clear a round after serving everything.
Holes will open up on the floor of the many long corridors, which the girl cannot cross. The closest child will come to chase after you.
You can only get caught or run out of time 3 times, after that that’s it.

So, About the Program
The BGM plays by calling a music routine through the timer interrupt. Furthermore, whenever you get milk or place it on a table, SOUND is used so that the PSG does not stop outputting sound. Excuse me if the sound is bad!
The variable that holds the girl’s movement coordinates is tracked for the number of changes it gets, and that number is then used to open the holes on the ground.
The distance calculation between the girl and the children doesn’t use powers of 2 or square roots, since ABS achieves the same!
The number of children and open holes is also influenced by time and such.

{Table 1} Variable Table

{Picture 2} Deliver the milk at the top to the tables!
{Picture 3} The milk is to the left, the hole is to the right. The children chase you down.
{Picture 4} Put the milk on the table. Hurry!

CHECKER FLAG
Kage: This is Dr. D’s “Program Summary in One Breath”. Go!
Dr. D: 110~180 moves the girl, 200~220 selects the chasing child, 240~280 moves the child, 320~330 is the milk grabbing, 350~370 is for placing the milk on the table, 390~410 is the round clear, 430~460 takes care of time running out and misses, 480~520 is the music routine and 540~670 draws the screen. Phew, that’s all…

Saitama-agato

Hello, I’m 埼玉県人!! Recently, I got mentioned in a page of the magazine, and people pronounced my name as “Saitama-ken-jin”, which is completely wrong!! It’s actually “Saitama-agato”. Nice to meet you.
By the way, this time around I challenged myself with something for the brand-new MSX, per the Editor’s request. The concept of this game came from “Orienteering” for the MZ-2000, from page 106 of Novemeber’s issue (It wasn’t exactly a lacking concept per se. Editor and Kage would start sending me threats if I said that…). Your prayers have been answered, editorial team! (Gotta butter ’em up!)

Game rules
Move yourself (O) and collect the invisible flags. The compass in the upper right indicates the flag’s direction through the “|” and “-” symbols.

Controls
Just the cursor keys.

Editor: When is Dr. MSX coming out?
Dr. D: I wonder, if I released that book, would book storefronts have them all lined up?
Editor: If that happened, our department would have to make programs for some time.

Notes:

(1)
The background is based off the screenshots, so the starfield might not be
exactly right. I made the clouds match the screenshots, but you can edit them
if you want more or less cloud obfuscation.

(2)
The spelling of BUTTON as BOTTUN is in the printed listing as well as the
screenshots, so I left it as-is.

(3)
The {M5} text in the comments represent the white M5 block. You could skip
these since they are just comments, or use the keyboard GRAPH key to type
them in.

Game Instructions:

This is a two-player game, so grab a friend (or fumble around controlling both
players in an emulator like I did).

Mario and Luigi are having a fight using their home-made planes. Each plane is
equipped with a typhoon cannon that knocks the other player off-balance. If
a player smashes into the ground, they take damage. Try to be the last one
to survive!

Press the Start button to begin a new game. Use the “A” button to use your
thrusters and move around. The game has a lot of momentum and gravity is
quite strong, so it takes some getting used to. Use the “B” button to fire
off your typhoon cannon. If the typhoon cannon hits your opponent, it will
knock them off-balance and (hopefully) get them to crash into the ground. The
faster they are moving when they hit the ground, the more damage they will
take. You can also fly into your opponent to push them around.

The game has two meters for each player — balance and damage. The balance
meter controls how far off-balance you will be when you get hit by a typhoon
blast. The lower the number, the less off-balance you will get. The damage
counter goes up the more damage you take — if you hit 100 then you lose!

The title screen introduces a few characters who will walk along the bottom
of the screen to provide some advantages:
– Turtle reduces your damange
– Penguin increases opponents balance (puts them more off-balance)
– Crab decreases your own balance (makes you more balanced)
– Mario (“god”) swaps the damange of the two players

The game keeps track of how many games each player has won, and displays this
on the title screen. You can press “Select” here if you want to clear the
scores.

Story

The setting is China. You must catch the escaped Pekin Ducks. However, if it escapes into the shadows of trees or mountains, you cannot catch it no matter how much you shoot. There is also one bird that has no substance and is only a figure which you can never catch.
Now, how many Pekin Ducks can you catch?

How to play

When you run the game, you will be asked how many Pekin Ducks will appear, so enter the number you like (if you enter a number that is too small, the game will end before you can do anything, so it is better to enter a number over 100).
Then, the Pekin Ducks and a crosshair will appear, so aim and shoot
To operate, use the D-Pad to move the crosshair in eight directions, and use the A or B button to fire the bullets.
The game is over when the number of Pekin Ducks you entered at the beginning appear on the screen. However, please note that some ducks are already displayed on the screen. When the game is over, press any key to start again.
If you think it’s too easy, you can change the numbers in the MOVE statement on line 270 to move the bird so fast that it doesn’t become a game.

Finally

Recently, there are a lot of magazines that specialize in the Famicom, but I think BEEP, which also covers video games and PC games, is better (seriously).
So please continue to cover Hoppy games, video games, and PC games in a balanced way. Of course, Id like to see more coverage of the Famicom as well…
So please enjoy your time.

Ozidual note

The NES file assumes 100 ducks are chosen so you don’t need the keyboard.

Notes:

(1)
The background is based off of two screenshots. I cannot be sure that
some of the graphics are exactly matching, or that the colors are the same
(since the image is black-and-white).

(2)
This game, in my opinion, is heavily skewed toward player 1, as player 2
cannot register controller input if player 1 is holding down a button. I
think you’d have to agree to not hold down any buttons before you play in
order to keep it semi-fair.

(3)
For the NES rom version of the game, I have hard-coded both player’s lives to
25, since the keyboard will not be available.

Game Instructions:
This is a video game version of a game called “shirizumou”. This is a game
in which you stand back-to-back and try to knock the other person off-balance
by hitting their butt with your butt. Hence the “butt sumo” translation for
the title.

When you start the game, it asks for the number of lives or hit-points for
each player (Mario is player 1, Luigi is player 2). From there, you have to
use both controllers to tap A or B to try and knock out your opponent. If
you knock then down with your “A” attack then 1 hit point is deducted. If you
knock them down with your “B” attack then 2 hit points are deducted. The game
ends when one of the players’ life bars gets down to zero. You can press
Start to begin a new game.

An adventure story about wandering in a three-dimensional maze!

This is a so-called Role-Playing game. However according to
Far Dai-sensei, “Role-Playing Bokko” is a more correct expression.
Um, just like basking in the sun. Is it because there is a code?
When the title screen appears, press S to start the game. The
state of the wall where the inside of the upper left square frame
can be seen in front. The letters on the right are your various
abilities and other data. From the top:

H.P…Physical Strength (current physical strength in order of maximum physical strength)
EXP…Experience value
A.C…Defensive power (ability to dodge enemy attacks)
S.L…Attack power (power to attack the enemy)
LEV…Level
GLD…Gold
DAY…Number of days

Your position is in the parenthesis at the end. From the left,
Order of Rank, X coordinate, Y coordinate. What this what floor
are you on now? I know what it is.
RUN and enter your name to start.
Well, the game is mainly a maze.
It displays COMMAND(L,R,…) in Normal mode. Type L and press
return to turn left. R is right. Then type F to move forward.
If the coordinates are (0,0,0) you can buy by pressing B. C is
for camping. It will take a few days but your strength will recover.
Fight when you meet a monster. At this time, use F to fight
and E to escape. Afterwards, INPUT(A,S) is displayed and you choose
how to fight. A with weapons and S fights with magic (however,
magic cannot be used unless LEVEL is 6 or higher).
Every time you defeat a higher level monster your EXP and GLD
increase. When your EXP rises above a certain amount you can
go to 0,0,0 and choose B and your level will go up.
While wandering around, INPUT(U,D) sometimes appears. This is
the stairs. You can go up with U and down with D. Go up to the
5th floor and see DRAGON (weird). If you defeat the colorful
turtle, you win. You can only shop on the first floor so you
have to go back from time to time.

Basic info:
This can only be run on a PC-6001mkIISR or a PC-6601SR, in the N66SR-BASIC mode. Any other models or BASIC modes will not work. To start the program, insert the .cas tape, then simply enter “cload” and then enter “run”. In the construction mode, you make your own level. You move the cursor with the arrow keys, place objects with the space bar, and press enter when you’re done. The first object you place will be your penguin, Penkichi, the second will be the green life preserver, and then the rest of the objects will be the normal red life preservers. You only get one penguin and one goal. Pressing space on an object will make it cycle between all available remaining objects. Starting normally, or on your own constructed level, you play with the arrow keys to move Penkichi along the life preservers. You can push the life preservers across the water by pressing space and pushing the direction of the life preserver you want to push.

Penkichi’s voice lines:

Kicking a life preserver: “I’m gonna kick your ass” (apparently, according to deepl)

Beating a level: “Please ride this to go to the south pole”

Starting the next level: “No, no, no. Something else?”

Beating level 10: “Alright!”

Beating your own constructed level: “Original round clear”

DeepL magazine translation:

Story:
There was a penguin in a zoo in a certain town. His name was Penkichi. One day, Penkichi decided to go back to Antarctica, so he sneaked out of the zoo. But when he looked closely, he saw that the river was full of life preservers.

How to play:
You must take Penkichi to the goal (the green life preserver). Penkichi can only walk on the life preservers. If Penkichi gets stuck in the river, they will die.
You can use the cursor keys to move and the spacebar to get rid of a life preserver. To do this, press the spacebar and Penkichi will shout, “Let’s shoot! There are 10 levels in total, and there is no level you can’t solve, so please do your best.

Construction:
Press the down arrow key on the title screen to move Penkichi. Press the spacebar to select CONSTRUCTION. The screen will change to the construction menu.
CONSTRUCTION: This is for creating a level. Press the RETURN key to set the time.
Enter the time of the quotient in the range of 100-1000. Then return to the menu.
START: This is used to start a level that has been sub-created by CONSTRUCTION. If you hear a beep and it does not start, there is no start or no goal. Please fix it. TITL… Back to the title.

Finally,:
If you don’t like the background music, change the data in lines 1790-1800 (one note at a time), and don’t forget to add “END” at the end.

Postscript:
When GAME OVER, press space to start the game from the title, or press the right arrow key to start from the dead side. (Disclaimer: as far as I can tell, pressing the right arrow key, or any key other than space during the game over screen, does nothing. Either I made an error typing up the program, or this is false.)

Checker Flag: (in Micom Basic, this is a column where the Editor, as well as Dr. D, the magazine’s fictional character who teaches readers to program a game in BASIC, discuss the game between themselves).
Editor: It’s a puzzle game, and it’s quite difficult.

Dr. D: Even on the PC-6001, if you want to play a game of this type, you’ll have to go through a lot of trouble.

Editor: It’s because it’s fast.

Dr. D: That’s right. But the way you create the data for the levels is not very good.

Yellow bullets explode when they hit the Magenta base, but the score varies depending on the degree of destruction: 100 points are added for slight damage, 200 points for half destruction, and 300 points for complete destruction.

How to play –

Move your spaceship by moving the cursor ↑↓→←. Missiles are fired forward with D and diagonally with C.

The rule is that the mountain scrolls from right to left. Destroying the “Spades” (fuel tank) on top of that mountain will increase fuel by 20%. Also, if you destroy “Clubs” (radar), your score will increase by 10 points. Similarly, destroying a UFO will increase your score by 100 points.

However, there are mines floating in space. On top of that, UFOs also launch mines. If your spaceship hits a mine, mountain, fuel tank, or radar, the game is over. Note that if the fuel runs out, the spacecraft will crash.

Story:
You might feel a Deja-vu with this game, where Puyan blows up blue monsters using bombs.

How to Play:
Puyan is represented by the color red, while the monsters are blue. Guide Puyan close to the monster and set a bomb. Be cautious as the bombs are positioned overlapping Puyan. They explode approximately 1 second after placement, spreading in four directions. If a monster comes into contact with this explosion, it will perish, and you’ll capture it.
Puyan will perish if captured by a monster or caught in the explosion. Thus, after planting the bomb, swiftly move away to a safe spot unreachable by the explosion. If three Puyans die, the game ends.
You earn 10 points for each monster caught. Clearing four monsters advances you to the next stage. If you clear a stage without any Puyans dying, you receive a bonus of 100 points multiplied by the stage number.
Upon clearing stage 10, you gain an extra Puyan as a bonus and return to the first stage.

How to Operate:
Use the arrow keys to move Puyan and press A to plant bombs. To restart the game, press S.

Input Method:
Save List 1 and List 2 onto a cassette and then load them sequentially using the CHAIN command to execute the game automatically.
