Low doses of carbon monoxide, similar to levels experienced by smokers, can protect against neurodegeneration in Parkinsonβs disease models. Researchers discovered that carbon monoxide reduced the accumulation of the Parkinsonβs-associated protein alpha-synuclein and activated pathways that limit oxidative stress.
